A Judge Just Put the White House Press Ban on Ice

CNN, MS NOW, and Politico get their hard passes back for 14 days while the lawsuit moves.

A federal judge ordered early Thursday that the White House restore access for CNN, MS NOW, and Politico. NBC News reported U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly granted a 14-day temporary restraining order, finding President Donald Trumps ban on the three outlets was likely unconstitutional and that their credentials were pulled without due process. That is not a final win. It is a court telling the executive branch it cannot freeze out reporters for the tone of their coverage and call it process.

I write this with a baby monitor somewhere in the house. Press access is not a media club fight. It is how parents find out what the White House is doing on war, taxes, and schools before the spin hardens. Trump announced the ban on Truth Social last Friday, citing “FAKE NEWS,” per NBC News. Kelly rejected the later national-security gloss, BBC News reported, noting the record did not show that yanking those hard passes would protect security.

The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, the White House Correspondents’ Association, and a group of 49 news organizations filed a brief backing the outlets, NBC News said. Empathy for a president who hates hostile coverage is human. Excusing a ban that skips the rules courts already set for hard-pass revocations is not. The White House sent letters Tuesday offering written contests by Friday. Kelly still found the process inadequate under D.C. Circuit precedent.

On Capitol Hill, the contrast is sharp. The Hill reported Senate Majority Leader John Thune saying banning outlets is “not my policy, and that the courts will decide the White House fight. Senate Republicans told The Hill they are fine with reporters moving freely around the Capitol even as the White House tried to lock three doors. That split matters. One branch still lets the public’s proxies ask questions in the hallway.

Fourteen days is short. The lawsuit continues. If the ban comes back without real standards published in advance, voters should treat that as the story, not the insults on Truth Social. Kids grow up under whoever holds the briefing room. They deserve more than a guest list written in anger.
