LSU Just Shipped Seven to the League. The Next Wave Is Already in Purple and Gold.

Sep 01, 2026

Dek: April's draft class cleared out Death Valley. Lane Kiffin's No. 1 portal haul restocked the factory with veterans already on 2027 boards — and Clemson is five days away.

The hook: Seven Tigers heard their names in the 2026 NFL Draft, headlined by corner Mansoor Delane at No. 6 overall to Kansas City. Official LSU athletics and NOLA.com both logged the full board.

Why it matters: Programs that feed the league keep recruiting programs that feed the league. LSU has now produced the SEC's top pick three straight years — Delane (2026), Will Campbell (2025), Jayden Daniels (2024) — per LSU's own draft archive.

The reload: Kiffin signed a transfer class ranked No. 1 nationally (SI, CBS Sports, ESPN). The headliners — QB Sam Leavitt, OT Jordan Seaton, EDGE Princewill Umanmielen — arrived with NFL tape, not just NIL buzz.

The calendar: No. 11 LSU opens under Kiffin on Saturday, Sept. 5, when Clemson visits Tiger Stadium (LSU athletics; AP preseason poll).

College football sells a lot of myths. One that keeps holding up in Baton Rouge: when Saturday ends, Sunday still wants Tiger tape.

The 2026 NFL Draft proved it again. LSU athletics announced seven players selected across seven rounds in Pittsburgh. Delane went first-round, No. 6 overall, to the Chiefs — the first LSU Tiger and first SEC player off the board, and the third-highest defensive back pick in program history. Safety A.J. Haulcy (Indianapolis, third round, No. 78) and wide receiver Zavion Thomas (Chicago, third round, No. 89) went Friday. Day three brought tight end Bauer Sharp (Tampa Bay, No. 185), wideout Barion Brown (New Orleans, No. 190), linebacker Harold Perkins Jr. (Atlanta, No. 215), and quarterback Garrett Nussmeier (Kansas City, No. 249). Nussmeier earned Senior Bowl MVP honors before the draft, LSU said. NOLA.com separately tracked eight undrafted free-agent signings from that roster.

That is the factory humming — not a claim that this year's Tigers are already NFL players. They are college players with a measurable path.

Then the roster turned over. Brian Kelly was fired. Kiffin walked in from Ole Miss and hit the portal hard. AP's season preview put LSU at No. 11 in the preseason Top 25 and counted more than 40 newcomers. The selling point for the biggest ones was the same pipeline Delane just walked.

Start with Leavitt. The Arizona State transfer was the No. 1 player in the portal class, per SI and 247Sports. In 2024 he threw for 2,885 yards and 24 touchdowns with six interceptions, rushed for five scores, and helped the Sun Devils into the College Football Playoff, the Associated Press reported. A Lisfranc injury cut 2025 short; AP says Leavitt told reporters he has been "100% for the past few months." Kiffin's pitch, on the record to AP: "You're playing quarterback at LSU, which has been a pretty good move the last 10 years," nodding at Joe Burrow and Daniels. On "In The Bayou With Tyrann Mathieu," Kiffin called Leavitt an "NFL mindset quarterback from a preparation standpoint," 247Sports reported. Draft analyst Todd McShay, on The Ryen Russillo Show (via SI, Aug. 29), said Leavitt "could wind up being the best quarterback from this class" — a projection, not a guarantee. That is scout talk. The tape still has to show up Saturdays.

The blindside and the edge match the quarterback. ESPN's Pete Thamel reported Seaton — ESPN's top offensive tackle and No. 4 overall transfer — committed to LSU over Miami, Oregon, and Mississippi State, with an expected first-round look for 2027. ESPN Research credited him with zero sacks allowed in nine games in 2025. PFF's 2026 preview ranked him No. 5 among returning tackles and flagged potential top-10 pick talk if the run-blocking grade catches the pass set. Umanmielen, the portal's No. 1 edge per CBS Sports and 247Sports, followed Kiffin from Oxford after a 2025 season LSU's roster page lists as 9.0 sacks (No. 3 in the SEC) and 13.0 tackles for loss, plus third-team All-SEC. That is not "LSU fielding NFL players." That is three veterans whose next evaluation window is 2026 — and, if the tape holds, the 2027 draft.

From Trinity, Texas, the interest is simple: LSU still sits in the SEC's gravity well with Texas and Texas A&M on the schedule (AP preview). The portal did not invent the LSU-to-NFL conveyor. It just restocked it after seven names left in April.

Saturday night does not crown anybody. It starts the tape. If Leavitt stays healthy, Seaton anchors the edge, and Umanmielen hunts the backfield, Death Valley will be arguing about draft slots by New Year's. Programs that cannot replace draft capital die in this sport. LSU just spent the winter proving it still can.
