Shipley owns Friday at Walnut Cove. Fifteen under. Everybody else is chasing.

Neal Shipley’s 62 turned the Biltmore Championship into a one-name leaderboard through 36.

Neal Shipley just turned Friday at Walnut Cove into a statement day.

The Cliffs at Walnut Cove gave up a 62, Shipley signed for nine under on the round, and the FedExCup Fall opener suddenly has a clear number at the top of the board: 15 under through 36. Ben Kohles is right there at 14 under after a 63 of his own. Everybody else is chasing.

That is a long way from Thursday’s co-lead. Eric Cole and Max Greyserman opened with matching 64s. Cole posted a 68 Friday and slipped to solo fifth at 10 under. Greyserman’s 67 kept him tied for third at 11 under with Ricky Castillo, who ripped a 62 of his own after an opening 69. Seamus Power is in the mix at nine under (66-67), tied for sixth with Jackson Suber, Jacob Bridgeman, and Pontus Nyholm.

The cut landed at three under. Plenty of names who showed up in Asheville for a Fall start will be watching the weekend from the couch.

Shipley’s round had the kind of early fireworks that change a leaderboard before lunch — birdie, birdie, eagle — and he never really let the day cool off. Kohles answered with eight under of his own. When two guys go nuclear on the same Friday, the rest of the field gets a simple memo: you are already a shot or two behind before Saturday’s tee sheet even prints.

Weekend golf in the mountains, preferred lies still in play after the rain, and a leaderboard that finally has a name in bold at the top. Shipley’s got the stick. Kohles has one shot. Castillo and Greyserman are the first names in the chase pack. Cole’s still in the room. Power made the cut and gets two more days at it.

Saturday at Walnut Cove should be loud.
