Sweep That Flipped Medinah

The Internationals sweep Friday foursomes 5–0 at Medinah and flip the Presidents Cup board to a 7–3 lead.

Medinah woke up with the Americans ahead by a point. It went to bed with the Internationals holding a four-point lead and five clean foursomes wins in the book.

Session 2 at the Presidents Cup finished Friday as a shutout. The International Team took all five alternate-shot matches and flipped the board from a 3–2 U.S. edge after Thursday’s four-ball to a 7–3 International lead heading into the weekend at Medinah Country Club outside Chicago.

Corey Conners and Nick Taylor got the first one, knocking off Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns 1-up in the opener. Sungjae Im and Hideki Matsuyama followed with a 3-and-2 win over Russell Henley and Jacob Bridgeman. Ryan Fox and Min Woo Lee edged Collin Morikawa and Wyndham Clark 1-up. Adam Scott and Christiaan Bezuidenhout beat Justin Thomas and Cameron Young 3 and 2. Tom Kim and Si Woo Kim closed it out 4 and 3 against Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele.

That is a full session, and it is the kind of day that changes how a Cup feels. The U.S. still has Saturday’s double session and Sunday singles left, and the first team to 15½ points takes the trophy. But Friday’s foursomes belonged entirely to the visitors.

Across the Atlantic, the FedEx Open de France wrapped Round 2 at Le Golf National. Matt Fitzpatrick held the halfway lead at 13 under after a 64, one clear of Jeff Winther. Defending champion Michael Kim sat third at 11 under after a 68. Ryan Gerard was among those tied for fourth.

Back in Illinois, the scoreboard is the story. Thursday’s narrow American lead is gone. The Internationals own the Friday card, and Medinah waits on Saturday to see whether the hosts can climb back into this Cup.
