Neal Shipley is still the man in Asheville, and Saturday did not shake him loose.
He walked off The Cliffs at Walnut Cove at 21 under after a bogey-free 65, one clear of Ben Kohles after both of them went out and shot the same number. Shipley’s week now reads 65-62-65 for 192. Kohles is 65-63-65 for 193. One shot. One round left. That is a Sunday you can taste.
Ricky Castillo and Eric Cole are tied for third at 17 under. Castillo matched the leaders with a 65; Cole went one better with a 64. Jacob Bridgeman and Max Greyserman sit a shot further back at 16 under. Then the board gets loud: Haotong Li ripped a 61, 10 under on the day, and jumped into a knot at 15 under with Jackson Koivun (63), Marco Penge, and Seamus Power.
Shipley and Kohles have owned this debut FedExCup Fall stop since Friday. They were 1-2 after two rounds, and they stayed 1-2 after three. Nobody stole the lead. Li just made sure the chase pack still has teeth.
Final round is Sunday at Walnut Cove. Shipley has the chair. Kohles has the seat next to him. Everybody else has a mountain.
